(FWS) and the American Sportfishing Association (ASA):
- There are over 44 million sport fisherman and women in
the United States. (FWS)
- Fishing remains the number one pastime in the United States. (FWS)
- Sixteen percent of U.S. residents over age sixteen fish. (FWS)
- People who fish on average report spending sixteen days fishing per year. (FWS)
- The number of people who fish is almost two times the
number of people who play golf. (FWS)
- As of 2001, the sport fishing industry in the United States generated
approximately $41.5 billion in sales annually and accounted for
approximately 1 million U.S. jobs. (ASA)
- Since 1955, the total number of
sport fishermen and women in the United States has more than
doubled and has increased at a rate much greater than the rate
of population growth. (FWS)
- During the 1990's, the total number of fishing days increased. (FWS)
- During the 1990's, the total amount of money (adjusted for inflation)
spent on fishing increased. (FWS)
